![]() ![]() The game was showcased during Square Enix's Square Enix Presents livestream presentation of March 2021, now under the official name of Forspoken. During the presentation a teaser showed sneak peek about the game world and gameplay. The game was originally revealed under the working name of " Project Athia" during Sony's State of Play livestream presentation of June 2020. Allison Rymer worked as the main connective tissue between the initial story-breaking and world-building that they developed in 2018 and the more fully realized story that has developed since then. Whitta worked with Rymer, who he said was "an incredible asset" in the writer's room. With writers joining at different times throughout the development process, Whitta didn't work directly with Hennig or Stashwick who picked up the "story baton" after his work was completed to develop the story from there. With the scale and ambition of the project other writers were brought on board to help with the creative process of shaping the story and setting of Forspoken. With some initial visuals to work with, Whitta was tasked with taking Square Enix and Luminous Productions' initial points of inspiration and shaping them into a story and fantasy world that would later become the building blocks for Frey's adventure. Whitta was first approached by Square Enix back in 2017 about potentially working on Luminous Production's newest title and was given a largely blanks canvas to create the fantasy world and story Forspoken, with their full support and cooperation. ![]() Bear McCreary and Garry Schyman are composing music for the game. ![]() The game's writing team includes Gary Whitta (who also serves as story team lead), Allison Rymer, Amy Hennig, and Todd Stashwick. We conducted the tests at 10 homes spread across the New York City metropolitan area. Some models worked better than others, but it was hard to predict which antenna would perform best in any particular location. In our tests of top-selling indoor TV antennas, reception depended mainly on how far we were from broadcast towers, plus the terrain and details of our surroundings, such as buildings, trees, and hills. Getting great reception from an indoor antenna can be a mix of science and art. That means the days of attaching tinfoil to an antenna’s rabbit ears to improve reception on marginal stations are gone. Ever since the move to all-digital TV, over-the-air signals tend not to attenuate, or drop off, the way analog signals did. In some ways, using an antenna is easier than it used to be. We can’t help with the geography, but we do have tips on how to get the best reception possible in your home. That goes for both where you live and where you place your antenna. But an indoor TV antenna is easier to set up, and for some people, it’s the only practical option.Īnd just like in real estate, indoor TV antenna reception is all about location, location, location. Outdoor antennas, especially those on a roof or mast, generally offer the best performance, particularly if you’re many miles from the nearest broadcast towers. If you want to use an antenna to get your local channels you’ll need to make sure you can get decent reception. People willing to pay for subscriptions can put together an even more robust package of streaming content for as little as $25 a month Of course, many antenna users supplement over-the-air programming with free streaming services. The new broadcasts will also support 4K video and high dynamic range (HDR) content. ![]() That means you may be able to stream some shows right over the air. Among other enhancements, these new “Next-Gen TV” signals can carry internet content alongside traditional TV broadcasts. The next couple of years will be a particularly good time to give an antenna a try, because a new over-the-air standard for broadcasts, called ATSC 3.0, is now rolling out. You can often get additional digital subchannels that offer everything from old shows and movies to local amateur sports. If you live near a major TV market, there’s a good chance you can receive many local networks, such as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS, and Telemundo. ![]() If you set up an antenna, you may find that the quality of the stations you receive is better than it was with old analog TV broadcasts-and perhaps even better than cable. Many cord cutters are switching to free over-the-air television by using an indoor TV antenna. If you can't get TV reception with an indoor antenna, a gain amp may not actually help you, and in other cases, it could make your reception worse by overloading channels that already have a strong signal.Last year, cord-cutting boomed, when more than 5 million households cut ties with a traditional TV provider, and the trend is expected to accelerate in 2023, according to Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall. The numbers printed above are the best results with or without amplification. The same applied for the 2023 batch: for instance, the Ultra Vizion wouldn't work at all with the amp attached, while the others did. Based on our experiences in a number of locations over the years, amplifiers can affect signal strength in wildly unpredictable ways. It's worth noting that some of these antennas - the Btfdreem, Gesobyte and the Ultra Vizion Plus - included gain-boosting amplifiers. Did the antenna have a long, high-performance coaxial cable or, even better, a detachable one? You'll be sticking one of these in your window, which could be a long way from your TV, so longer is better. Most of the TV antennas were based on the same rectangular design, but there was one important consideration: the cable. While the outcome will vary depending on where you live and how far you are from TV towers, we found that the best-performing models received more of the most popular channels as well as local channels and additional radio broadcasts and Spanish-language stations. Mercedes-Benz obviously had to cut some corners to keep the price so low, but it retains the vault-like feel and top-of-the-line safety features expected in a high-end hatchback. A slick six-speed manual gearbox is available to please purist drivers. Aggressive thrusts on the accelerator bring aggressive shifts that let the engine wind up, while more lethargic driving is met with earlier shifts that save fuel. A five-speed automatic, which adds $1,300 to the sticker price, is capable of monitoring the driver's habits and shifting accordingly. Two transmissions are offered, both of which lean toward the sporty side. A noisy, metallic clicking sound during acceleration seems very undignified for a car with such a luxurious nameplate. But if the engine's feel is French cuisine, its sound is more like Mickey D's. The 192-horsepower, supercharged four-cylinder engine sends plenty of force to the rear wheels, with power coming smooth and even throughout the rev range. Its suspension is fairly soft, but it still injects confidence for spirited driving or emergency lane changes. There's the option to manually adjust the clips used and the transitions, including dragging out any footage that you don't want. By default QuikStories are square, ideal for Instagram, but you can switch to a more typical wide-aspect you can also switch from the default 720p to 1080p, and a 60fps frame rate. It's not instantaneous, but once it's complete you can choose between different themes – which each have their own effects and styles – and music. That metadata is sent over with the footage itself, and Quik uses it to cook up a highlight reel. It'll even listen out for whoops or cheers – EXTREME sports people love whooping and cheering – and flag those sections as being extra-valuable. It uses the new GP1 chip on the HERO6 itself, combining data from the accelerometer and other sensors with analysis of the content of your clips to figure out the best parts, like when faces are visible. While you can edit footage in your choice of app, GoPro's QuikStories feature promises to do it all for you. You can, at least, leave the transfers running in the background as you do something else with your phone. Shorter clips whip across in a matter of seconds, but there's still some waiting involved if you have anything longer. Of course, if you're shooting at the maximum 4K60 resolution that speed bump is going to be offset by larger file sizes too. Happily, GoPro embraced 5GHz WiFi this time around, with the promise of roughly 3x faster file transfers to your iOS or Android phone. You can of course switch out the HERO6's microSD card if you need more capacity, but getting the footage over to a mobile device generally depends on wireless speed. Rising video resolution and quality options has meant file sizes are soaring: there's a reason the default minimum storage size in 4K-capable smartphones is increasingly becoming 64GB. What GoPro is really pushing is its mobile app. If you're using a PC or Mac, you can plug in via the included USB Type-C cable and drag the files right out: however, it's worth noting that some resolutions, notably the 4K, use the HEVC codec not H.264 and so you might encounter issues with playback. Once you've got all that footage, then you need to transfer it off the camera. It'd be great if, had the camera heard its "GoPro" trigger word but not recognized the specific instruction, it flashed up some suggestions of what you should actually be saying on the display. There's a list of the supported commands available through the HERO6's touchscreen, but it's buried in the settings so doesn't exactly lend itself to access while in the midst of an activity. ![]() That is, when I could remember the commands: say "GoPro start video" for instance and the camera will do nothing, since it's listening out for "GoPro start recording" specifically. ![]() Turns out, with the language set to UK English and a fairly loud shout, I had a reasonable success rate. ![]() Since I often have issues with voice recognition systems (particularly in cars, unless I adopt an unconvincing Valley Girl accent) I was curious to see how GoPro's version would handle it. That was an opportunity to test the HERO6's voice control – it can recognize commands across ten languages, including switching modes, and starting and stopping recording. It wasn’t even midday and yet I had found my phone drained of all its life in large part due to the phone constantly working in tandem with the app and camera. After that, I unceremoniously hoisted my exercise-shy body onto an e-bike and headed out from San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. It was all fun and games, and I was happy with my finished result, until I realised what the app had done to my battery. If you dare, these videos can even be easily transferred to your social media pages for all to see but I decided to keep this one for me. My finished product eventually saw it take inspiration from film noir, placing the entire film into a pessimistic black and white filter adding a modern-ish twist with the accompanying anti-pop lyrics of The Smiths. What’s extra impressive is that it allows you to dig into your own music library, not just limiting you to the preset tunes. Options include adding text to parts of the film, layering filters across the screen and even choosing music to partner the video. I started playing around with the app and discovered that if you are not convinced by the video that has been made you can edit it yourself. ![]()
![]() Honestly, this is one of those games more interesting for the fact that it exists than anything else. If so, business is going to be great for him when he comes back. I never found Joe the gravedigger’s body. The next thing I needed to do was in the study. I got stuck here and had to resort to a walkthrough. I found nothing useful there it’s the game’s own Maze of Twisty Little Passages, but I did find that you can return to the kitchen by moving “up” from the forest’s starting screen, if you can even find your way back there.Įxploring the house again and keeping my eye out for anything looking like doors, I found that the attic had a door leading to a storage room with a locked chest that my key could open. So I went to the forest in case I could find anything of value there, using my collection of items as breadcrumbs. I explored as much of the house as I could, but still couldn’t find a use for the key. I think at this point we’re supposed to conclude this and not think too hard about it, or consider possibilities such as that maybe Joe strangled Bill with some nylons that he found in a bedroom drawer, and then killed Sally and left one of Bill’s blond hairs on her body to throw the detectives on the wrong trail. That much I can remember from my previous playthrough. I’ve so far refrained from mentioning that I already know Daisy did it. Tom the plumber, Joe the gravedigger, and Daisy the cook are left. Mystery House had no instruction manual other than the blue reference card, but there are ingame instructions, which seems to be a common thing in early Apple II games.įour down. Even there, the title is “High-Res Adventure #1.” Did the Williams' already know there would be more? Or is this a re-release, and might there be a lost, older version where the ingame title is simply “Mystery House?” The fact that color is not used anywhere in the game except the title screen makes me consider this as a possibility. There’s also a curiosity in the title screen. ScummVM has a monochrome mode, but it renders everything in an unattractive green.ĪppleWin has an actual black-and-white mode free of any color artifacts, and it’s also possible to switch to it and back without quitting the game, unlike ScummVM. This should be white-on-black, but the vertical lines are green and purple! This is due to the Apple II’s unusual method of drawing colored pixels, where pairs of horizontally adjacent pixels generate artifact colors, only appearing as white when both pixels in the pair are "on." ScummVM renders a sharper display in color mode, but aside from the title screen, Mystery House is a black and white game, and the Apple II video chip handles color strangely. In replaying Mystery House, I opted to use AppleWin rather than ScummVM, due to the way colors are handled. ![]() This kind of situation is exactly why I have my method of identifying and playing notable ancestors, of which Mystery House certainly qualifies. It’s there where I first heard of Colossal Cave Adventure, which was mentioned frequently as the game that inspired Ken and Roberta Williams to make their first game, Mystery House, which, according to Sierra, was the first graphical adventure game ever made.Īt some point during the Windows XP era, when I was comfortable with computer emulators, I decided to go on a Sierra retrospective, starting with the Apple II High-Res Adventures.
